
Spencer Jarnagin (1792-25 June 1853) was a US Senator from Tennessee (W) from 17 October 1843 to 3 March 1847, succeeding Alexander O. Anderson and preceding John Bell.
Biography[]
Spencer Jarnagin was born in Grainger County, Tennessee in 1792, and he became a lawyer in 1817. He worked as a lawyer, served in the state senate, and was a member of the Board of Trustees for the University of Tennessee, and he was elected to the US Senate in 1841. However, Democrats in the state legislature refused to allow a quorum on the issue of his election, and he did not take office until 1843. Jarnagin failed to win re-election or election to the Tennessee Supreme Court, and he practiced law in Memphis until his death in 1853.
