Special forces are military forces trained to perform unconventional missions, with these tasks including counter-terrorism, counter-insurgency, airborne operations, and unconventional warfare.
History[]
Although uses of ninjas in Japan and rangers by European countries existed in the past centuries, the modern special forces were founded during World War II. From 1940 to 1946, the "British Commandos" carried out special forces operations against the Axis Powers. In addition, the US Army Rangers, Marine Raiders, OSS, SAS, Chindits, and Brandenburger Regiment were formed during the war as special forces to conduct missions behind enemy lines and to launch subversive operations. After World War II, special forces became a major part of the military, and they conducted operations from counter-terrorism/hostage rescue, airborne operations, black propaganda, to search and destroy. Today, special forces have been used for covert operations, counter-terrorist operations, hostage situations, and other scenarios in which the regular army could not be used.
