The Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) is a social democratic political party in Spain, founded on 2 May 1879 by Pablo Iglesias Posse. The PSOE was originally a socialist party, and it was elected to power in 1935 after the revolution that toppled the dictatorship of Miguel Primo de Rivera. The party would be one of the major members of the Frente Popular coalition during the Spanish Civil War, and it would be suppressed under Francisco Franco's rule. The PSOE would lead Spain from 1982 to 1996 and from 2004 to 2011, and the party supported the UGT trade union in politics. The party often competes with the People's Party of Spain (PP), a conservative party, in elections.
