The Soviet Navy was the naval arm of the Soviet Union armed forces, formed in 1918 after the Russian Revolution. The Soviet Navy had a height of 467,000 personnel, 895 ships, and 1,172 aircraft during the 1980s and early 1990s, and it had four fleets across the USSR's territorial waters. It rivaled the US Navy during the Cold War, but it never had a major surface engagement in its history; its ships were integrated into the Russian Navy after the fall of the USSR in 1991.
