South London is the southern part of London, Greater London, England. It consists of the boroughs of Southwark, Lambeth, Merton, Croydon, Bromley, Sutton, Richmond upon Thames, Kingston upon Thames, Wandsworth, Hammersmith and Fulham, Kensington and Chelsea, and Greenwich. It consists of areas formerly in northern Surrey and western Kent, and all of South London used to be known as "Southwark" during the 18th century. The opening of the Westminster Bridge encouraged growth in the southwest, but, as only Tower Bridge was built to the east of London Bridge, growth in the southeast was slower. By the 2010s, South London had 2,835,200 residents.
