South Korea, formally the Republic of Korea (ROK), is a country located on the southern half of East Asia's Korean peninsula, with its capital at Seoul. South Korea was formed on 15 August 1948 when the United States helped in setting up an administration to govern the democratic-controlled areas of Korea. From 1950 to 1953, South Korea and a US-led alliance of United Nations member states fought against the expansionist northern neighbor of South Korea, North Korea, and South Korea would negotiate a ceasefire with North Korea at Panmunjom to end the war. However, the two countries were still officially at war, and the Korean demilitarized zone became the site of several clashes between the ROKA and KPA. South Korea grew into an economic power, becoming a home to the large car industry (such as Hyundai-Kia), the technology industry (such as Samsung), and the internet industry, having the highest smartphone ownership and internet speed. In 2016, South Korea had a population of 50,801,405 people, and South Korea is one of the most powerful countries in the world.
