South Amboy is a suburban city in Middlesex County, New Jersey. The area's name comes from the Lenape word Ompoge, meaning "level ground". South Amboy was incorporated on 21 February 1798, and it would become known as a strong enclave of Poles from the early 20th century onwards, caused by the influx of Polish (as well as Irish) railroad workers.
