
Sosuke Uno (27 August 1922 – 19 May 1998) was Prime Minister of Japan from 3 June to 10 August 1989, succeeding Noboru Takeshita and preceding Toshiki Kaifu. He was a member of the Liberal Democratic Party of Japan.
Biography[]
Sosuke Uno was born in Moriyama, Shiga Prefecture, Japan in 1922, and he attended the Kobe University of Commerce. He served as an Imperial Japanese Army officer during World War II, and he entered politics after the war, winning election to the National Diet in 1960 as a member of the Liberal Democratic Party of Japan. In 1989, he became Prime Minister, and he instituted the country's first consumption tax, which led to the Japan Socialist Party's victory in the Tokyo metropolitan legislative election of 1989. In addition, the corruption scandal of the year before negatively impacted Uno's premiership, and he was forced to resign.
