Sostrate (463 BC-) was a Corinthian hetaera during the 5th century BC.
Biography[]
Sostrate was born in Corinth, Corinthia, Ancient Greece, and she became a hetaera. As a high-class prostitute, she was ambitious to climb the social ladder by making an advantageous marriage, and she became betrothed to the crime boss "The Monger". After the Monger was publicly murdered by a mercenary in 430 BC, Sostrate offered a reward for the death of the responsible mercenary, even travelling to Argos to search out the killer. She initially believed that Hippolytos the Insignificant was the murderer, but, when she came across Kassandra, she later accused Kassandra of killing the Monger. Rather than lying, Kassandra said that Sostrate had no reason to be sad, as she said that the Monger had been running Corinthia into the ground. Sostrate then rebuked Kassandra, saying that Kassandra should care less about Corinthia and more about the life that she ruined. Sostrate then attacked Kassandra, who wounded her with an arrow before leaving the wounded Sostrate to grieve by herself.
