Soraya Saenz de Santamaria

Soraya Saenz de Santamaria (10 June 1971-) was the Deputy Prime Minister of Spain from 22 December 2011 to 7 June 2018, succeeding Elena Salgado and preceding Carmen Calvo.

Biography[]

Soraya Saenz de Santamaria was born in Valladolid, Spain on 10 June 1971, and she graduated from the University of Valladolid in 1994 with a law degree. She became an elite jurist, and she became a member of the People's Party of Spain. From 2004 to 2008, she served as executive secretary of the People's Party's domestic policy, and she became Deputy Prime Minister and government spokesperson under Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy in 2011. In 2017, when Catalonia held an independence referendum, she said that she would strike down the referendum law right after it was passed. In 2018, Rajoy's government was forced out in a vote of no confidence, and Saenz retired from politics in September 2018 after losing the PP leadership contest.
