Song Jiaoren (5 April 1882 – 22 March 1913) was President of the Kuomintang from 1912 to 1913, preceding Sun Yat-sen. He was assassinated by the head of the military, Yuan Shikai, after a bitter struggle between the two men.
Biography[]
Song Jiaoren was born on 5 April 1882 in Hunan, China, and he was interested in world events instead of civil service. He befriended the revolutionary Huang Xing, and he fled to Japan while preparing revolutionary groups for an uprising against the Qing dynasty. and he returned to China to lead the Kuomintang in its revolution against the government. In 1912, Song became the first president of the Kuomintang party after the Xinhai Revolution, and he opposed Yuan Shikai's plans to become emperor. In 1913, he was shot twice at close range at a railroad station, with Yuan Shikai being implicated in the murder. Jiaoren was shot through the window of the train by a man with a revolver, and Huang Xing attempted to go after the murderer, but he could not find him.
