Solomon W. Downs

Solomon Weathersbee Downs (1801-14 August 1854) was a US Senator from Louisiana (D) from 4 March 1847 to 3 March 1853, succeeding Pierre Soule and preceding Judah P. Benjamin.

Biography[]

Solomon Weathersbee Downs was born in Montgomery County, Tennessee in 1801, and he became a lawyer in Bayou Sara, Louisiana in 1826. In 1845, he moved to New Orleans. From 1845 to 1847, he served as a state attorney, and he went on to serve in the US Senate from 1847 to 1853 as a Democrat. He died in Lincoln County, Kentucky in 1854.
