Solomon Foot (19 November 1802 – 28 March 1866) was a member of the US House of Representatives (W-VT 1) from 4 March 1843 to 3 March 1847, succeeding Hiland Hall and preceding William Henry, and a US Senator from Vermont (R) from 4 March 1851 to 28 March 1866, succeeding Samuel S. Phelps and preceding George F. Edmunds.
Biography[]
Solomon Foot was born in Cornwall, Vermont in 1802, and he became a lawyer in Rutland in 1831. He went on to serve in the state legislature before serving in the US House of Representatives from 1843 to 1847 and in the US Senate from 1851 to 1866. As a Whig representative, he opposed the extension of slavery and the Mexican-American War, and, as a Republican, he opposed the pre-American Civil War peace talks due to them being a sham by secessionists. He died in office in 1866.
