Sokmen (1069-1104) was the Bey of the Artuqids from 1102 to 1104 (succeeding Artuk Bey and preceding Rukn al-Daula Da'ud) and the Governor of Jerusalem from 1091 to 1098 (succeeding Artuk Bey).
Biography[]
Sokmen was born in 1069, the son of the general Artuk Bey of the Seljuk Empire. After his father's death in 1091, Emir Tutush I of Damascus had Sokmen become the new governor of Jerusalem, but he lost this title in 1098 when the Fatimid Caliphate conquered the city. He secured a fief in Suruc, Sanliurfa Province in southern Turkey after the capture of Jerusalem, and in 1104 Sokmen and his brother Ilghazi defeated the crusaders at the Battle of Harran. He died of illness while returning to Damascus after the victory.
