The Socialist Revolutionary Party was a democratic socialist political party in the Russian Empire and Soviet Union that existed from 1900 to 1940. The SRs were involved in the 1905 Revolution against the Russian Empire, and it was one of the most important leftist parties in Russia until the rise of the Bolshevik party of Vladimir Lenin; its SR Combat Organization was one of the most powerful leftist terrorist organizations during the political upheaval in Russia. The SRs shared power with other liberal and democratic socialist forces in the State Duma after the 1917 Russian Revolution, and it won a plurality of the vote in the November 1917 elections, the first-ever democratic elections in Russian history. However, the Constituent Assembly was dissolved in January 1918, and the SRP split into pro- and anti-Bolshevik factions as a result of the Bolshevik seizure of power. The party continued its politics in exile, and the party was a member of Socialist International until 1940.
