The Socialist Republic of Macedonia was a constituent republic of Yugoslavia that existed from 2 August 1944 to 8 September 1991, with Skopje serving as its capital. On 2 August 1944, the republic was established in the Bulgarian occupation zone in Yugoslavia, and the ruling League of Communists of Macedonia sought to build the Macedonian nation and eliminate its ties to ethnic Bulgarians. Macedonia was a Yugoslav socialist republic until 1990, when it became a parliamentary democracy, and it changed its name to the "Republic of Macedonia" in 1991. On 8 September 1991, Macedonia declared its independence.
