The Socialist Republic of Croatia was a constituent republic of Yugoslavia that existed from 14 June 1943 to 25 June 1991, with Zagreb serving as its capital. The republic was formed after the Yugoslav Partisans liberated Croatia from Axis occupation and the Ustase fascists of the Independent State of Croatia, with the League of Communists of Croatia being the ruling party. In February 1990, amidst a rise in Croat nationalism, Croatia transitioned to a multi-party democracy, with Franjo Tudman and the conservative and nationalist Croatian Democratic Union taking power after the first free elections in May 1990. The country was renamed to the "Republic of Croatia" in July 1990, and Croatia declared its independence from Yugoslavia in 1991, leading to the Croatian War of Independence.
