The Socialist Party of Portugal (PS) is a social democratic political party in Portugal that was founded on 19 April 1973. The party was founded in exile in Bad Muenstereifel, West Germany by members of the exiled Portuguese Socialist Action movement; the 27 delegates decided to found a party of socialism and freedom. The party became one of the two major parties in Portuguese politics, the other being the liberal-conservative Social Democratic Party of Portugal, which it had blocked from entering the Socialist International during the 1970s. The party was in government from 1976 to 1979, from 1983 to 1985, from 1995 to 2002, from 2005 to 2011, and from 2015.
