The Socialist Autonomous Province (SAP) of Kosovo was an autonomous province of Yugoslavia within Serbia, the other being Vojvodina. The region existed from 1945 to 1963, when it became an autonomous province of Yugoslavia. In 1989, Yugoslav leader Slobodan Milosevic stripped Kosovo of its autonomy on the 600th anniversary of the Battle of Kosovo, a major blow to the Albanian community of the province. The name "Metohija" was added to the province's name in 1990, and the title "Socialist" was dropped. On 28 September 1990, SAP Kosovo became the "Autonomous Province of Kosovo and Metohija".
