The Social Security Amendments of 1965 was a package of amendments to the US Constitution that was signed into law by US President Lyndon B. Johnson on 30 July 1965. The law created Medicare and Medicaid, providing federal health insurance for the elderly (people over 65) and for poor families, and it was a major part of Johnson's "Great Society" reforms.
