Social Democrats, USA (SDUSA) is a minor social democratic political party in the United States, founded in 1972 to replace the Socialist Party of America. The party dropped the "socialist" name to stop people from confusing socialism with communism, which the SDUSA opposed. The party also opposed George McGovern's faction of the US Democratic Party, instead favoring the transformation of the Democratic Party into a social democratic party by creating a coalition of labor unions, civil rights organizations, and other organizations. The SDUSA's members were involved with the AFL-CIO and other unions, including the American Federation of Teachers, and the party included Civil Rights movement leaders such as Bayard Rustin. Because of the party's support for the Solidarity labor union in Poland and its disagreements with the mainstream Democrats, its members were accused of being neoconservatives and right-wing social democrats.
