The Social Democratic and Labor Party (SDLP) is a social democratic political party in Northern Ireland that was founded on 20 August 1970. The SDLP was founded with the goal of overseeing a peaceful reunification of Ireland with the British-controlled north, rejecting physical-force Irish republicanism and the radical views of the Sinn Fein party. The party was the most popular of the Irish republican parties during The Troubles, but it lost its popularity by 2001, when Sinn Fein gained more popularity, in part due to the success of the Good Friday Agreement. By 2017, the party had lost all representation in the House of Commons, the House of Lords, and the European Parliament, and it held 12/90 Northern Ireland Assembly seats and 63/462 local council seats.
