The Social Democratic Party (PSD) is a social democratic political party in Romania that was founded on 16 June 2001. The Social Democratic Party originated with the anti-communist National Salvation Front of Romania (FSN), and Ion Iliescu founded the PSD after the breakup of the FSN; the Party of Social Democracy in Romania (PSDR) was founded on 17 January 1990 as the PSD's predecessor. The PSD became the largest party in the country, having the largest number of mayors, local and county councillors, and county presidents, as well as being the largest party in Parliament as of 2017. The party supported socialist economics and social conservative views, and it opposed gay rights; during the 2010s, it suffered from several corruption scandals and anti-government demonstrations.
