The Smith & Wesson Model 39 pistol is a semi-automatic pistol developed in 1954 for the US Army pistol during the trials of that same year. After the Army abandoned its search for a new pistol, the Model 39 went on the civilian market in a year later and became Smith & Wesson's first generation of semi-automatic sidearms.
