Smiles a Lot (1849-) was a Lakota Sioux brave who lived in Colorado during the late 19th century. In 1863, he and two other young Indians took part in a failed attempt at stealing US Army lieutenant John Dunbar's horse from the deserted Fort Sedgwick, but he later befriended Dunbar, who saved him from a stampeding buffalo during a buffalo hunt. He and his two friends later helped to fight off a Pawnee raid on the Sioux village, shooting an arrow into the Pawnee warrior Sakuruta's leg. Smiles a Lot also carried the horses used by Wind in His Hair and his small party of warriors during their rescue of the captured Dunbar from the US Army, and, while Smiles a Lot was pistol-whipped in the face by Sergeant Lawrence Bauer as Bauer attempted to steal one of the horses to make his escape, he was tomahawked in the chest by Smiles a Lot when he turned to face another Indian attacker. When Dunbar decided to leave the tribe in 1864 to prevent the Army from tracking the Lakota down, Smiles a Lot silently and tearfully handed Dunbar his recovered journal before running off in sorrow.
