Skip Tyler was a US Navy submarine commander during the Cold War. Retired at the time of the 1984 Red October crisis, he helped CIA analyst Jack Ryan identify the propulsion system of the Soviet submarine Red October, explaining how its "caterpillar drive" rendered it undetectable to passive sonar.
