The Sinhalese are an Indo-Aryan ethnic group native to Sri Lanka, making up 75% of the population (with a population of 15,173,820) in 2012. The Sinhalese came to Sri Lanka in 543 BC, emigrating from Sinhapura in India under Prince Vijaya. The Sinhalese people mostly practice Theravada Buddhism, while there is also a Catholic Christian minority.
