The Simla Conference was a meeting held between Viceroy of India Louis Mountbatten and Indian independence leaders Abul Kalam Azad, Mahatma Gandhi, and Muhammad Ali Jinnah at Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, India (then a part of the British Raj) from 24 to 25 June 1945. The two sides agreed to Archibald Wavell's plan for the separate representation of Muslims and reduced majority powers for both Hindus and Muslims in their majority regions, but the issue of selecting the Muslim delegates caused consternation. The All-India Muslim League refused to allow for the dominant Indian National Congress party to select the Muslim delegates, and the two sides could not agree on a solution to the problem. The conference ultimately had no results, as the UK Labor Party's victory in the general election that year led to the Indian independence goal being accelerated by the British government.
