Sima Zhi

Sima Zhi (232-291) was Prince of Pengcheng during the Jin dynasty. He was slain in battle with his rival, Prince of Donghai Sima Yue, during the War of the Eight Princes.

Biography[]

Sima Zhi was born in 232, a member of the distinguished Sima clan of Cao Wei. Under the Jin dynasty, he was rewarded with the title of Prince of Pengcheng by his relative, Emperor Sima Yan, making him a minor prince with control of Pengcheng Commandery in Xu Province.

In 291, at the start of the War of the Eight Princes, he was declared a traitor by Empress Jia Nanfeng for his support for Sima Liang and Wei Guan, and she sent Sima Yue to crush Sima Zhi's uprising. Sima Yue captured much of Pengcheng Commandery before Sima Zhi led an army to oppose him at the Battle of Shimen in the winter of 291.

In the ensuing battle, Sima Zhi was killed in the thick of the melee, and Zhi Pingwen became the new ruler of his lands.
