Silas Woodson

Silas Woodson (18 May 1819-9 October 1896) was the Democratic Governor of Missouri from 3 January 1873 to 12 January 1875, succeeding Benjamin Gratz Brown and preceding Charles Henry Hardin.

Biography[]

Silas Woodson was born in Barbourville, Kentucky in 1819, and he was the most outspoken opponent of slavery at Kentucky's 1849 constitutional convention. He left the state after the 1850 constitution enshrined it into law, settling in St. Joseph, Missouri. He served as Governor from 1873 to 1875, and he institutionalized public schools. He died in 1896.
