Biography[]

Sigurd Sigurdsson was the son of Jarl Sigurd Thorsson, and he accompanied his father on his campaigns in Mercia and Wessex during the late 9th century. In 898, he first met Uhtred of Bebbanburg at the Battle of St. Neots, where Uhtred defeated his father. In the summer of 899, he came across Uhtred again while Uhtred met with Hastein in Chester, and he angrily challenged Uhtred to a duel to avenge Uhtred's burning of his father's ships. Hastein failed to restrain Sigurd, who was then beaten. Uhtred aimed his sword at his neck, but told him that he was too young to fight him, and he said that it was not his day to fight. Uhtred had Sigurd drop his sword, and he told him that he wanted him to remember the day that he challenged Uhtred. Uhtred then mangled the boy's sword hand and told Hastein to tell the older Sigurd that he had spared his son. In 902, he again fought Uhtred at the Battle of the Holme, with Uhtred stabbing him through his neck, chin, and tongue and briefly lifting him in the air before dropping his body.
