Sigtryggr of Wicing

Sigtryggr of Wicing (849-881 AD) was a Danish sea king who led the Wicing band of Vikings during the late 9th century AD. In 880 AD, he sailed from Frisia with a large army of Norse raiders and landed at Maldon in Essex, taking the town from the Danes of East Engle; he sacked the city after its capture. Sigtryggr then pushed on to Chelmsford, which suffered the same fate. However, his small enclave in Essex was surrounded by the lands of the powerful East Anglian Vikings, and he was without an ally. Later that year, he failed to convince King Alfred the Great of Wessex to sign a declaration of friendship with him, as Alfred knew of Sigtryggr's deceit and of his bloodlust. In the winter of 880 AD, the East Anglians recaptured Maldon, cutting off Sigtryggr's army. In the spring of 881 AD, Sigtryggr was slain in battle with Guthrum's army, and Wicing was eliminated.
