Sigebriht (died 902) was the West Saxon ealdorman of Kent during the late 9th century. He was slain at the Battle of the Holme in 902, where, contrary to Aethelwold Aetheling's expectations, he sided with King Edward the Elder against Aethelwold and his Danish allies.
Biography[]
Sigebriht was the son of ealdorman Sigelf of Kent, who built the walls of Aescengum. During the 890s, he sought to murder Edward the Elder, who had an affair with Sigebriht's beloved Ecgwynn and fathered illegitimate twins. In 902, Aethelwold Aetheling sought to manipulate Sigebriht into supporting him as Alfred the Great's successor, planning to have him raise the Kent fyrd to attack Edward's army from the rear as the Vikings attacked the front. In the Battle of the Holme, Sigebriht ultimately joined forces with Edward against the Danes and was killed in battle by Cnut Longsword, who threw a spear into his chest.
