Siegfried Line

The Siegfried Line was a line of forts and tank defenses built as a part of the Hindenburg Line during World War I and used during the final years of World War II. It protected Germany from invasion by the Allied Powers, and in 1944 it was reactivated as George S. Patton's United States US 3rd Army closed in on the Rhine River on the Germany-Belgium border. In September 1944-February 1945, the very costly Battle of Huertgen Forest breached the Siegfried Line, and by early 1945 the Saar and Hunsrick bunkers had fallen, destroying the line and allowing for the Allies to push into Germany.
