The Siege of Sparta occurred in 33 BC when Octavian's general Decimus Vergilius Praetextatus captured the Greek city of Sparta from Mark Antony's garrison during Antony's Civil War. Following the Battle of Leontium, Praetextatus had greatly weakened the Antonian garrison of Sparta, and he pressed the attack now that Antony's Legio II Graeca had withdrawn to Athens. In the ensuing assault, Praetextatus took Sparta with 169 losses, among them the remaining cavalrymen in his legion and the survivors of two cohorts of legionaries (one of them an elite First Cohort unit). Sparta's capture isolated Antony in Attica, enabling Praetextatus to take Athens with ease.
