Sichuan is a province located in southwestern China, named for the "four circuits of rivers" in the region. The capital of Sichuan is Chengdu, a major economic center of China that has been the region's capital since it was known as Yi Province under the Han dynasty and Eastern Jin. The region was conquered by several barbarian tribes such as the Qiang during the chaos of the Sixteen Kingdoms period, but the Sui dynasty and Song dynasty were able to conquer Sichuan, with the Song defending it against attacks by Tibetans. In 2013, the region had a population of 81,100,000 people.
