Shurahbil ibn Hasana (571-639) was a sahabah of Muhammad and a general of the Rashidun Caliphate during its conquest of the Levant.
Biography[]
Shurahbil ibn Hasana was born to the Arab Kindah tribe in 571, and he was an early convert to Islam before becoming one of Muhammad's companions. He took part in the raids against the pagan Arabs during Muhammad's lifetime, and he fought against the tribes which had left Islam following Muhammad's death. Shurahbil later commanded one of the four Muslim armies sent to conquer the Levant from the Byzantines and its Arab Christian allies, and his 7,000-strong army was sent to southern Jordan to subdue the Quda'a tribes; he later took part in Khalid ibn al-Walid's capture of Bosra in 634. He served as deputy commander at the Battle of Fahl, and he was then left in command at Fahl (Pella). From 634 to 635, he captured Jerash and the Golan Heights region, and, after the Battle of Yarmouk, he conquered all of northern Palestine apart from Caesarea, which fell after a siege of several years. He and Yazid ibn Abi Sufyan died of plague in 639.
