Shoshenq I

Shoshenq I (died 922 BC), also known as Shishak, was Pharaoh of Egypt from 943 to 922 BC, succeeding Psusennes II and preceding Osorkon I.

Biography[]

Shoshenq was the son of the Meshwesh Libyan chief Nimlot and the nephew of Osorkon the Elder, and he served as commander-in-chief of the Egyptian army and as an advisor to Pharaoh Psusennes II before succeeding the heirless Psusennes on his death in 943 BC. Shoshenq established his capital at Bubastis, appointed his sons to important positions in the Egyptian government and military, and pursued an aggressive foreign policy. Shoshenq forged a marriage alliance with King Jeroboam of Israel, with Jeroboam marrying his daughter Ano and persuading him to side with him against Judah. Shoshenq conquered Byblos and several cities in Syria, Philistia, Phoenicia, the Negev, and the Kingdom of Israel, sacking Jerusalem and carrying off the golden shields forged by King Solomon from Solomon's Temple. He died in 922 BC.
