Shiv Sena is a far-right political party in India that was founded on 19 June 1966. The party was founded by political cartoonist Bal Thackeray, and its name in Hindi means "Army of Shivaji", honoring the founder of the Maratha Empire. The party was based in Maharashtra, and it demanded preferential treatment for Maharashtrians in Mumbai over migrants to the city. During the 1970s, the party developed a Hindu nationalist ideology, and it aligned itself with the Bharatiya Janata Party. The party supported nationalism (both religious and economic) and gave free houses to slum dwellers, increasing its support. The party also had a strong control over Bollywood movies. The party was blamed for communal violence in Bhiwandi in 1970 and 1984 and in Bombay from 1992-1993 due to its fascist views.
