Shimea was the second son of Jesse, the younger brother of Eliab and Abinadab, and the older brother of David. In 1063 BC, the prophet Samuel anointed the young David as King of Israel despite him being the youngest of his brothers, and David's older brothers were resentful towards David when he joined them at the Battle of the Valley of Elah with gifts from their father.
