Shihei Okura

Shihei Okura (14 March 1898 – 17 August 1942) was an Imperial Japanese Navy officer during World War II. Okura was killed during the Makin Raid.

Biography[]

Shihei Okura was born in Gujo, Gifu Prefecture, Japan on 14 March 1898, and he became an Imperial Japanese Navy officer. During World War II, he was stationed on Makin, where he was responsible for torturing and executing US Marine Corps prisoners-of-war. On 17 August 1942, he was strangled to death by Sergeant Tom Sullivan's shotgun when the Marine Raiders assaulted the island and rescued the prisoners, having just killed Private Kevin Pyle. His aide Manobu Wakatsuki was also killed.
