Sherrick Farm

The Sherrick Farm is a historic farm located on the Antietam National Battlefield near Sharpsburg, Maryland. Christian Orndorff purchased the land in 1761, and Pennsylvanian settler Joseph Sherrick purchased the land in 1796, becoming neighbors with fellow settler and friend Jacob Mumma, owner of the Mumma Farm. The 194-acre Sherrick Farm was caught up in the September 1862 Battle of Antietam, during which Robert Toombs' Confederate command took positions near the house and defended against Union attacks from Burnside's Bridge. The Sherrick Farm suffered artillery and rifle damage, but any damage was light, and the farmstead was used as a Union hospital for six weeks after the battle. The Sherricks later received compensation from the US government, and the National Park Service acquired the farm in 1964, leaving the home untouched and well-preserved.
