Sherman W. Tribbitt

Sherman Willard Tribbitt (9 November 1922-14 August 2010) was the Democratic Governor of Delaware from 16 January 1973 to 18 January 1977, succeeding Russell W. Peterson and preceding Pete du Pont.

Biography[]

Sherman Willard Tribbitt was born in Denton, Maryland in 1922, and he served in the US Navy in the Atlantic during World War II. He operated a supply company in Odessa, Delaware after the war, and he served in the State House from 1957 to 1965 and from 1971 to 1973, as Lieutenant Governor from 1965 to 1969, and as Governor from 1973 to 1977. He began the state lottery to deal with Delaware's fiscal crisis, but the unresolved financial situation led to his defeat for re-election. He died in 2010.
