Sherden

The Sherden were one of the Sea Peoples who, during the Late Bronze Age, fought as mercenaries and raiders in the eastern Mediterranean. Traditionally associated with the Nuragic tribes of Sardinia, the Sherden began to serve overseas as warriors due to Sardinia's wealth of mines, which provided the island's warriors with an abundance of military equipment. The Sherden wore corsets, kilts, and horned helmets, and wielded round shields, spears, daggers, and swords in battle. In 1278 BC, Pharaoh Ramesses II defeated them when they attempted to raid Egypt's coast, only to incorporate many of the captured Sherden into his personal guard and even resettle Sherden in Egypt. These Sherden fought for Ramesses at the Battle of Kadesh. Other Sherden raiders came to Egypt as raiding "Sea Peoples", and they were defeated by Pharaoh Merneptah. These Sherden were resettled in northern Canaan at a land called Sared, and their leader Sisera served as a general of Canaan during its wars with the Israelites.
