Sheikh Massiva of Catanzaro

Sheikh Massiva of Catanzaro (27 September 870-14 September 889) was Sheikh of Catanzaro under the Emirate of Crete.

Biography[]

Massiva was born on the Greek island of Crete in 870, the son of Sheikh Gauda of al-Hanim and his Greek Christian wife Theochariste, whom he executed when Massiva was 15. When Massiva came of age, he married the late Sultan Salim Iqritishi's daughter Aliyah bint Salim to bind the families together. He was then given the Sheikhdom of Catanzaro by his brother-in-law Yunus ibn Salim to provide him with a living and security. Massiva, influenced by his mother, was culturally Greek. He died in 889 at the age of 18 from severe stress, having had no children or heirs.
