The Shankill Road bombing occurred at 1:00 PM on 23 October 1993 when the Provisional IRA attempted to assassinate the leadership of the Ulster Defense Association in revenge for the Sean Graham bookmakers' shooting. The IRA made two mistakes; they did not know that the meeting had been rescheduled, and the "deliveryman" carried a bomb that would prematurely explode, killing himself and nine other people. 10 died and 57 were wounded in the bombing, a strategic failure for the IRA. The UDF struck back with a vengance, committing the Greysteel massacre on 30 October.
