Shalmaneser V

Shalmaneser V (died 722 BC) was King of the Neo-Assyrian Empire from 727 BC to 722 BC, succeeding Tiglath-Pileser III and preceding Sargon II.

Biography[]

Shalmaneser was the son of Tiglath-Pileser III and the brother of Sargon, and he succeeded his father as King of Assyria in 727 BC. After King Hoshea of Israel sent messages to Pharaoh Osorkon IV of Egypt in 725 BC, Shalmaneser captured Hoshea. The Egyptians then attempted to gain a foothold in Israel, then largely held by Assyrian vassal kings, so Shalmaneser invaded Israel and took Samaria in 722 BC after a three-year siege, deporting the populations to various parts of the empire (the "Ten Lost Tribes"). The populations he settled in Samaria became the "Samaritans". Sargon murdered Shalmaneser in a violent coup that same year, seizing power for himself.
