Shakopee

Shakopee (1736-) was the war chief of the Huron-Wyandot tribe from 1789. Shakopee succeeded Chief Canojaharie as Minister, and he fought against the Iroquois Confederacy.

Biography[]

Shakopee was born in Fort Sault Ste. Marie in 1736 in present-day Canada, and he became a war leader of the Huron-Wyandot clan. Shakopee fought as a warrior during the Seven Years' War, where he fought alongside the Kingdom of France, and during the American Revolutionary War he led warriors alongside Great Britain in their war with the expanding United States. Shakopee took over the tribe in 1789 after the death of the elderly Canojaharie and he continued the tribe's history of warfare with the Iroquois Confederacy, and he watched as the United States and Great Britain fought over the Iroquois homelands.
