Shabbona

Shabbona (1775-17 July 1859) was a chief of the Potawatomi tribe of Illinois.

Biography[]

Shabbona was born in Will County, Illinois to the Odawa tribe, a grandnephew of Pontiac. He fought under Tecumseh during the War of 1812, including at the Battle of the Thames, and he helped to persuade several Northwest Territory Indians to resist white settlement. However, he sided with the Americans during the Winnebago War of 1825 and warned Black Hawk against resisting white settlement in 1832. In 1836, the Potawatomi were removed from Illinois to Nebraska, but Shabbona returned to Illinois and died at his home in Grundy County.
