Sergei Antonovich Kozin (6 March 1908 - 6 October 1963), also known as the Monster of Magadan, was a Soviet prisoner who took part in the Second Vorkuta prison Uprising..
Biography[]
Sergei Kozin was born in Magadan, Russian SFSR, and he was known as "the Monster of Magadan" for his immense strength. Kozin mugged General Nikita Dragovich in front of his Soviet Army soldiers, so Dragovich had Kozin's tongue cut out by a rusted sickle to punish him for his insolence. Kozin was thrown in the Vorkuta prison with Viktor Reznov and several other Soviet dissidents, and he took part in the 1963 escape attempt. He killed two guards with his bare hands and another one with a pickaxe uppercut, and he pushed a fully loaded minecart to provide mobile cover for Reznov and Alex Mason. When the prison guards tried to shut the gate to the main armory, Kozin threw his body under the shutter to keep it open, allowing for Mason to slide under the shutter and capture the armory for the prisoners; Kozin sacrificed himself, being crushed by the shutter. His death allowed for Mason and several other prisoners to escape from Vorkuta.
